Garden Room Home Gym: Everything You Need to Know

Gym memberships get cancelled. Spare bedrooms get reclaimed. A garden room home gym doesn’t go anywhere — and it’s available at 6am, on Christmas Day, and at any other time a commercial gym isn’t.

We’ve built a number of dedicated garden gyms across Wirral and Liverpool, and they consistently come in as one of the most-used rooms we build. Here’s what you need to think about when planning one.

Size

You need more space than you think. A functional gym with a barbell rack, bench, and some floor space needs a minimum of 4m x 4m. For a full setup with cardio equipment, free weights, and a stretching area, 5m x 6m is more comfortable. We’ll design around your specific equipment list at the consultation stage.

Flooring

Standard laminate or vinyl won’t cut it for a gym. You need rubber flooring — either rubber tiles or rolled rubber matting — that can absorb impact from dropped weights and provide grip during training. This is something we factor into the build from the start.

Ventilation and temperature

Gyms generate heat. Good ventilation is non-negotiable — either mechanical ventilation or well-positioned opening windows and roof vents. High-spec insulation keeps the room warm in winter and, combined with proper airflow, manageable in summer.

Power and lighting

At minimum you need multiple double sockets for equipment, lighting that’s bright enough for training (not the warm ambient light you’d want in a home office), and ideally a dedicated circuit if you’re running commercial-grade cardio equipment. We include full electrical certification on every build.

Mirrors and fixtures

Wall mirrors, pull-up bar mounts, and wall-mounted storage brackets all need to go into solid-framed walls. We build with this in mind — no hollow stud walls that can’t take a fixing.

Noise

If you’re lifting heavy or using cardio equipment early in the morning, noise transfer to the house and neighbouring properties is worth considering. Good insulation helps significantly with this, and we can advise on additional acoustic measures if needed.

A bespoke garden gym built by our in-house team typically starts from £15,000, depending on size and spec. Get in touch for a free quote — we build across Wirral, Liverpool, Chester and Cheshire.
